Symposium on Tribology

Talk 1: Investigation of material microstructural degradation in bearing steels

In this talk, Ling will introduce the research on a number of failure modes occurring in rolling element bearings, including white etching cracking, dark etching region and white etching bands. Details on their characteristics, formation mechanisms as well as experimental methods will be covered.

Talk 2: Development of smart bearings using sensors and artificial intelligence techniques

In this talk, Ling will introduce the smart bearing concept in aero-engines, including our research strategy, sensor selection and experimental methods, as well as the AI techniques developed in the I2BS project for bearing health monitoring.

Brief Introduction of Speaker:

Ling is a Professor of Tribo-Sensing at the national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS), University of Southampton, UK. She has over 20 years research experience in the field of tribology and sensing. She has led a large number of research projects investigating rolling contact fatigue of rolling element bearings, including white etching cracks and white etching bands. She has also led an European Clean Sky project on the development of integrated intelligent bearing systems (I2BS), where advanced sensors and machine learning techniques are implemented, as well as many collaborative research projects sponsored by EU, UK Research Councils and industrial partners, with an over £12M research grant portfolio (as PI and Co-I). Ling has published over 100 peer reviewed research papers and given a number of keynotes and invited talks at national and international conferences.

Ling is Head of national Centre of Advanced Tribology Centre at Southampton (nCATS), Chairs a University Strategic Research Group on Monitoring of Engineered and Natural Systems Using Sensors, Co-leads a Centre of Excellence of Re-Engineering for Electric Mobility (RE4EM) at the University of Southampton. Externally, Ling won the BINDT COMADIT Prize in 2018 for her contribution to the benefit of industry and society through research and development in condition monitoring, and IMechE Tribology Group 2020 Donald Julius Groen Prize in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the sphere of tribology. Ling is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of BINDT and member of a number of professional institutions. She currently chairs the Tribology Group Committee at Institute of Physics and has recently become a Fellow of the Turing Institute.
